Backup Your Data using DLT tapesVarious computer problems usually ensue when the computer's drive systems contain too much data, or when the computer memory is close to, or is already full. Problems can range from the computer slowing down in processing data, to the computer crashing down and erasing all saved data along with it; this is the reason why computer backups are very important. DLT tapes, or digital linear tapes, are probably one of the most reliable backups you can find. They are ideal for archiving and storing files that you need for the longterm. Why DLT tapes DLT tapes, as the name suggest, are magnetic tapes designed for use with computers. They operate using a DLT drive and a special compression algorithm called the Digital Lempel Ziv 1 program (DLZ1). They retrieve and store data at high speeds and in large quantities. It can store about 70GB of data--that's a lot of storage space; most standard laptop computers only have a disk space of 40 to 60GB. With DLT tapes, you can store an entire computer's hard disk memory. Also, with DLT tapes, you can “write,” “re-write” or add data on the tape when needed. You can archive a lifetime's worth of files and data, so that you can go back to them for practical purposes or for sentimentalities' sake. Capacities and compatibilities There are various types of DLT standards, thus some may not be compatible with certain drives and so on. Incompatible DLT tapes may even damage your drive or damage the tape's contents, so be sure you know what you're doing first. DLT capacities usually range from 20 GB to 80GB and are thus priced accordingly.
